Generating and Resetting Passwords with 1Password

One of the biggest time-savers with 1Password is that you no longer need to think up, remember, or reset passwords yourself. 1Password generates a strong, unique password for you and automatically offers to save it, whether you're creating a brand-new account or changing the password on an existing one.
Generating a New Password
- On a site's sign-up or "change password" field, select the 1Password icon in the field.
- Choose Generate Password (or select the key icon in the extension).
- Adjust the length or character types if the site requires it, then select Fill or Use Suggested Password.
- When the site confirms the change, select Save when 1Password offers to update the saved login.
Resetting a Password on an Existing Account
If you're changing your password on a site directly (not through a "forgot password" email flow), 1Password will notice the password field and prompt you the same way: generate a new password, let the site confirm the change, then save it.
- Went through a site's "forgot password" email link instead? Just make sure to save the new password when 1Password prompts you after you set it.
- 1Password keeps a history of previous passwords for an item, so you can always look back if a site briefly still expects the old one.

Tip
Check the Watchtower section of 1Password periodically. It flags weak, reused, or breached passwords so you know exactly which ones to update.

Important
Never reuse your SFA sign-in password on any other website, and never reuse a generated password across two different sites. If one site is breached, unique passwords keep the damage contained to that one account.

Locked Out of Your 1Password Account?
This is different from resetting a website password above. This is about regaining access to 1Password itself. Since SFA uses single sign-on through SFACAS, 1Password unlocks with your normal SFA sign-in rather than a separate account password.
- Confirm you can sign in normally to other SFA systems. If you can't, that's an SFA sign-in issue, so contact the IT Help Desk to resolve your university credentials first.
- If your SFA sign-in works but 1Password still won't unlock, make sure you're using the correct SFA team address and the latest version of the app or extension, then restart it and try again.
- Still stuck, or lost a device? Contact the IT Help Desk so an SFA 1Password administrator can start account recovery for you. Self-service recovery options like an Emergency Kit don't apply to SFACAS/SSO accounts.
