Persona Identity Verification FAQ

Quick Overview

Select a question to see the answer.

Why does SFA ask me to verify my identity? ⌄

Duo protects your SFA account, so the person who enrolls a Duo device must be the real account owner. Verifying your identity stops someone from enrolling their own phone on your account or on a fake student account.

When will I be asked to verify? ⌄

Only when you enroll in Duo with no devices registered, such as your first Duo setup or after your old devices were removed, or when the Help Desk sends you a verification link. You are not asked every time you log in.

Is this email or link real? ⌄

Verification starts from the Duo enrollment screen or from an email the Help Desk tells you to expect. If you get a verification link you did not ask for, do not open it. Forward it to itsecurity@sfasu.edu.

Which IDs are accepted? ⌄

A physical, unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, passport card, or permanent resident card. Your SFA student ID is not accepted. See the full list in Verifying Your Identity for Duo Enrollment (Persona).

I'm an international student. Can I use my passport? ⌄

Yes. Select the country that issued your passport or ID at the start, then choose your ID type.

I don't have an accepted ID. What do I do? ⌄

Contact the Help Desk. Do not try to verify with a different document or someone else's ID.

The name on my ID is different from my name at SFA. ⌄

Use your ID as it is. If your verification goes to review, the Information Security Office will check it. If your legal name has changed, you may be asked to confirm it.

Who can see my ID and selfie? ⌄

Persona processes your photos on SFA's behalf to confirm your identity. Only authorized Information Security Office staff can view them, and only when a verification is flagged for review. They are not used for any other purpose.

My verification is under review. How long will it take? ⌄

Reviews are completed within 1 business day (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, excluding university closures). You do not need to start over.

My verification was declined. Can I try again? ⌄

Do not keep retrying. Contact the Help Desk so the Information Security Office can review it with you.

Can a parent or friend verify for me? ⌄

No. The ID and selfie must be yours. Never complete a verification for someone else, and report anyone who asks you to.
