Using a Hardware Token or YubiKey for Duo Authentication
Quick Overview
- Use a hardware token or YubiKey when you cannot use Duo Mobile
- Select Other Options at the Duo prompt to access token methods
- Enter the passcode generated by your device to sign in
- Contact the IT Help Desk if your token stops working
If you have been issued a hardware token by Stephen F. Austin State University, you can use it to generate a passcode for Duo authentication.
When prompted, enter the passcode in the Duo prompt and select Verify to complete sign-in.
Stephen F. Austin State University issues Duo hardware tokens only. Hardware tokens are provided when Duo Mobile cannot be used.
Most users should use the Duo Mobile app whenever possible.

Tip
Duo hardware tokens have a minimum battery life of two years. If your token no longer generates passcodes, contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.

Authenticate Using a Hardware Token
- At the Duo prompt, select Other Options.
- Select Hardware token.
- Press the button on your hardware token to generate a passcode, enter it, then select Verify.

Tip
Keep your hardware token in a secure location. Do not label it with your name, username, or email address.

Authenticate Using a YubiKey
Users may enroll a compatible YubiKey for Duo authentication. YubiKeys are not provided by SFA and must be obtained by the user.
- At the Duo prompt, select Enter a Passcode.
- Click into the passcode entry field.
- Tap your YubiKey to generate and submit a passcode.

Important
Hardware tokens can become out of sync if the button is pressed repeatedly without using the generated passcodes to sign in.

If your Duo hardware token is lost, damaged, or no longer working due to battery expiration, contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
