Quick Overview
  • Explains how Duo Restore works on Android devices

  • Provides steps to restore third-party accounts stored in Duo Mobile
  • Explains how to reconnect Duo-protected SFA accounts

Duo Restore allows you to recover Duo-protected accounts when setting up Duo Mobile on a new Android device or after reinstalling the app.

On Android, Duo Restore relies on Google backups. You must have backups enabled on your original device for restore to work on a new or reset device.

Before You Begin

  • You must sign in to a Google account on your device
  • You must enable Google backup for app data
  • Your device must have a screen lock enabled (PIN, pattern, or password)
  • Install the latest version of the Duo Mobile app

Enabling Duo Restore on Android

Duo Restore requires Google backup for app data. The exact menu options vary by device manufacturer, but most Android devices include Google backup settings within the main Settings app.

  1. Confirm that your Android device has a screen lock enabled.
  2. Open your device settings and locate the Google backup options.
  3. Enable backup for app data so Duo Mobile information is included.
  4. If you just enabled backup, run a backup so your device saves current data.
Tip
Duo Restore uses Google backup services. Backups offered by other vendors may not include Duo Mobile data.

Third-Party Accounts in Duo Mobile

Duo Mobile can also store one-time passcode accounts for third-party services. If you added third-party accounts in Duo Mobile, you may be prompted to create a recovery password so those accounts can be restored.

Important
Duo and SFA cannot reset or recover your third-party recovery password. If you do not have the recovery password, you may need to reconfigure 2FA directly within each third-party service.

Recovering Third-Party Accounts

  1. Install Duo Mobile from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open Duo Mobile and select I have existing accounts.
  3. Select the Google account used on your original device.
  4. If a backup is found, Duo Mobile restores available accounts.
  5. If prompted, enter your third-party recovery password to restore third-party accounts.

After recovery, you can generate passcodes for supported third-party services directly within Duo Mobile.

Recovering Duo-Protected SFA Accounts

Restoring accounts from backup does not always reconnect Duo-protected SFA accounts. You may see your SFA account listed with a Reconnect option.

  1. Open Duo Mobile on your restored device.
  2. Select Reconnect next to your SFA account.
  3. Sign in to an SFA Duo-protected application.
  4. Complete authentication using Duo Verified Push or your issued hardware token.

Troubleshooting Duo Restore on Android

  • If no accounts are found, confirm you selected the correct Google account.
  • If you recently enabled backups, run a backup and try again later.
  • If Duo Mobile was deleted from the original device, Android backups may have been removed.
  • If you do not have your third-party recovery password, you may need to reconfigure third-party accounts manually.
