Importing Your Existing Passwords into 1Password
Quick Overview
- Move passwords already saved in your browser (or another password manager) into 1Password.
- Applies to Faculty and Staff with logins saved in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or a similar tool.
- Import is a one-time export/import process. Expand your platform below.
- Always delete the exported file when you're finished; it contains plain-text passwords.
Rather than re-entering every saved login by hand, you can export your existing passwords to a file and import them straight into 1Password. The general pattern is the same across browsers: export a CSV file, import it into 1Password, then securely delete the file.
Import By Platform
Mac (1Password desktop app) ⌄
- In Chrome, go to Passwords and Autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings and select Download file under Export Passwords.
- Open the 1Password app and choose File > Import.
- Choose Chrome (or your browser) as the source, select the CSV file, choose your SFA account, and select Import.
- Delete the exported CSV file once the import is confirmed.
Windows (1Password desktop app) ⌄
- Export a CSV of your saved passwords from your browser's password manager settings.
- Unlock 1Password, select the ellipsis (…) menu, and choose Import.
- Choose your browser as the source, add the CSV file, select your SFA account, and import.
- Delete the exported CSV file once the import is confirmed.
iOS / Android ⌄
- Export your CSV file on a computer first (mobile browsers generally can't export password files directly).
- In the 1Password app, tap the plus (+) icon and select Migrate Data into 1Password.
- Choose your browser as the source, add the file, select your SFA account, and complete the import.
- Delete the CSV file from wherever you saved it once the import is confirmed.
1Password.com (Web) ⌄
- Export a CSV of your saved passwords from your browser's password manager settings.
- Sign in at 1Password.com, select your name in the top right, and choose Import Data.
- Choose your browser as the source, upload the file, and follow the prompts to complete the import.
- Delete the CSV file once the import is confirmed.

Important
The exported CSV file contains every password in plain, unencrypted text. Import it right away, then permanently delete the file. Don't leave it sitting in your Downloads folder or on a shared drive.

Tip
After importing, turn off your browser's built-in password manager (see Installing the Browser Extension & Turning On Autofill) so it doesn't compete with 1Password when filling logins.
