Do I have to use 1Password? ⌄
Eventually, yes. Early access begins with ITS now, and a university-wide go-live for all Faculty and Staff is planned for Fall 2026. Once that go-live happens, 1Password will be the approved tool for managing SFA credentials, and other password storage methods will be disabled or discontinued.
I didn't get my invitation email. What do I do? ⌄
Check your spam/junk folder first. If it still isn't there, contact the IT Help Desk and we'll resend your invitation.
Can SFA IT see my passwords? ⌄
No. 1Password uses end-to-end encryption, so the contents of your vaults are never visible to SFA IT or to 1Password, even though you sign in with your normal SFA credentials through SFACAS. Administrators can manage account access and shared vault membership, but they cannot view the contents of your personal vaults.
Do I need to remember a separate 1Password password? ⌄
No. SFA uses single sign-on through SFACAS, so you unlock 1Password with the same SFA username and password you already use elsewhere. There's no separate account password, Secret Key, or Emergency Kit to set up or store for your SFA account.
What's the free 1Password Families account for? ⌄
As part of this rollout, SFA provides every Faculty and Staff member with a free 1Password Families account (up to 5 people) for personal use. It's completely separate from your work vaults and is yours to keep.
1Password isn't autofilling my passwords. What should I check? ⌄
Try these in order:
- Confirm the browser extension is installed and unlocked (see Installing the Browser Extension & Turning On Autofill).
- Turn off your browser's own built-in password manager. It can conflict with 1Password.
- Confirm autofill/autosave is turned on in the extension's Settings.
- Still not working? Contact the IT Help Desk.
I'm locked out of my account. What do I do? ⌄
Since SFA uses single sign-on through SFACAS, you unlock 1Password with your normal SFA sign-in rather than a separate password. See the "Locked Out of Your 1Password Account?" section in Generating and Resetting Passwords with 1Password. If your SFA sign-in works but 1Password still won't unlock, contact the IT Help Desk so an administrator can start account recovery.
When will 1Password training happen? ⌄
Training for Faculty and Staff will be scheduled later this semester, ahead of the Fall 2026 go-live. Watch for an announcement with the date and sign-up details.
What happens to the passwords I already had saved in my browser? ⌄
You can bring them into 1Password yourself. See Importing Your Existing Passwords into 1Password. After importing, turn off your browser's built-in password manager so it stops competing with 1Password.
