Duo Mobile can be used in two different ways. It can verify sign-ins to SFA systems that are protected by Duo, and it can also store passcode accounts for personal or external services.
Duo-Protected Applications
Duo-protected applications are SFA systems and services that integrate directly with Duo. When you sign in, you will be prompted to verify your identity using SFA supported Duo methods.
- Examples include SFA web applications and services that require Duo authentication
- Authentication methods at SFA include Duo Verified Push and Duo hardware tokens
- Duo-protected applications are managed and supported by SFA
Tip
If you are signing in to an SFA system and see a Duo Prompt, you are using a Duo-protected application.
Third-Party Accounts
Third-party accounts are accounts you add manually to Duo Mobile for non-SFA services that support authenticator apps. These are separate from your SFA Duo enrollment.
- Examples include personal email providers and external services that support one-time passcodes
- Third-party accounts are managed by the service provider, not SFA
- If you change devices, you may need to restore or reconfigure these accounts
Important
If you remove Duo Mobile, reset your phone, or replace your device, third-party accounts may be lost unless you previously enabled backup and recovery options. SFA cannot restore third-party accounts for external services.
