Connecting to department printer

I am trying to connect my Mac to the department printer, but I can't seem to be able to.  I've tried using the Printer&Scanner options in System Preferences but it doesn't work.  I know individuals using PCs in my department see the printers with a specific name, but that name doesn't show up for me, rather I see the room number associated with the printers.  Is there a way for me to connect to the printers?
